Ambitious apprentice Kelly climbs the career ladder at YHG
An ambitious YHG employee has turned an apprenticeship into a permanent project management role following two years of mentoring and experience within the development team.
As Assistant Project Manager, Kelly Pointon is now helping to turn plans for three new developments totalling over 100 homes into reality.
Kelly joined Ascent Housing (as it was) in September 2014 as an apprentice administrator, helping the Development team deliver over 140 new houses, a community centre and Daisy Haye Retirement Village in Leek. The business was keen to create an employment opportunity for a local person.
“I applied for the role as it was local and sounded interesting,” Kelly said. “I got to help build brand new houses for local people, so it was nice to be involved in improving my local area.
“It was great to see the satisfaction on people’s faces when they moved into a new home, or customers settled into the new retirement village.”
After gaining more experience from shadowing the team Kelly was asked to manage the complete refurbishment of a three-bed semi-detached home in Cheadle, Staffordshire. She completed most of the project inside three months.
When in December last year Development advertised for an Assistant Project Manager, Kelly applied for the role, now with some great skills and experience on her CV.
Director of Development Lorraine Donnelly led the selection process and interview and was delighted the award the role to Kelly.
“I always wanted to get a permanent role” Kelly added. “I was determined and I enjoyed my work, so I kept at it. Even so, when I got the role it felt a bit surreal at first!”
Kelly now enjoys the extra responsibility and well-earned professional respect that comes with her permanent role.
