Awards keep coming for Stoke-on-Trent extra care schemes

Your Housing Group's Sapphire schemes add RIBA to RICS, LABC, HAPPI Completed and Housing Design wins

AN extra care scheme in Stoke-on-Trent has won a prestigious architecture award, joining its sister sites in reaching national finals.

Sapphire scheme Willow Barns in Blurton, designed by PRP architects, built for Stoke-on-Trent City Council and managed by Your Housing Group, won the Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) West Midlands award.

It joins sister schemes Maple West in Chell, a recent residential category winner at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards 2018, West Midlands, and Abbey Hulton’s Oak Priory scheme, nominated for a Housing Design Award to be announced on July 2.

Willows Barns will go forward to RIBA’s national finals to be held on June 22. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the national award-winning buildings later in the year.

Sapphire consists of developer Kajima, Your Housing Group and Eric Wright Group. All three of its sites were designed by PRP Architects who already have more than 100 architectural awards to their name. The schemes provide a total of 390 high-quality extra care apartments for Stoke-on-Trent.

Stoke-on-Trent City Councillor Randy Conteh, cabinet member for housing, communities and safer city said.  “We’re delighted that Willow Barns has been recognised by RIBA. The scheme has beautifully incorporated original 19th century farm buildings which gives it unique character and has maintained a cultural link to the local area.”

In its winning comments, RIBA judges said: “Willow Barns is … a thoughtfully conceived response to a sensitive site and community of elderly residents. In a simple way, with a restrained palette of materials, the architects have drawn on the character of the area to give the residents new affordable homes with a distinctive sense of place.”

Willow Barns’ regional RIBA win joins its other accolades: Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development at the 2017 LABC Building Excellence Awards, West Midlands 2017, and the HAPPI Completed Award at the 2017 Housing Design Awards.

Maple West will compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final on 2 November 2018 in London, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
