How to apply for a home
Your Housing Group doesn’t have its own housing waiting list. If you want to apply for a Your Housing Group home, you’ll need to contact your local council and submit your application to them.
Want to apply for social housing? You’ll need to meet certain criteria, which your local council will discuss with you.
You can apply for a vacancy through your local council, and they will nominate you to us. You may also be able to bid directly for the home through your council’s Choice Based Lettings portal.
The criteria for who can rent our homes can differ based upon your local Choice Based Letting Scheme. For legal reasons, however, there are specific rules that apply to all our properties (except some specialist housing). The following people will not be eligible to let our housing:
-
People from abroad who are subject to immigration control.
-
People from abroad with no recourse to public funds.
-
People who fail the ‘right to rent’ check.
As well as the above criteria, we will generally not let our properties to applicants where we have proof of the following behaviour:
-
Non-payment of rent.
-
Anti-social behaviour.
-
Aggressive, abusive or violent behaviour against Your Housing employees or customers.
-
Unspent convictions for a serious crime. This includes homicide, use of firearms, sexual or violent offences against children, hate crimes or drug offenses.
-
Posing a serious risk to communities.
We usually offer properties to people aged 18 or over, however, we'll consider granting tenancies to those aged 16 to 17 in line with duties placed on Local Authority Social Services under the Children’s Act.
In these circumstances we require a written guarantee from an appropriate person or organisation regarding unpaid costs or debts relating to the individual until they turn 18.
We'll work with social services to ensure that young people are supported in their tenancies through effective Young Persons Protocols where those exist.
If you're homeless, the best route for emergency housing is via your Local Authority where you may be able to get priority status for rehousing. You can also contact the charity Shelter for advice and support.
