Many people spend long periods outside as part of their day-to-day lives. Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the skin, and this damage builds up over time.

Anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of age, skin tone or lifestyle. That’s why prevention, protection and regular skin checks are so important.

Sun safety tips

If you spend time outdoors during the day, these simple steps can help protect your skin:

  • Cover up where possible. Wear long sleeves, trousers and a wide‑brimmed hat to protect exposed skin.
  • Use sunscreen daily. Choose sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and UVA protection. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating.
  • Seek shade when you can. UV levels are usually highest between 11am and 3pm.
  • Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses that provide UV protection.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps your body cope better in warmer conditions.

Even small changes, done consistently, can significantly reduce your risk.

Know your skin: checking makes a difference

Checking your skin regularly can help you spot changes early. Look out for:

  • new moles or marks
  • changes in size, shape or colour
  • a mole that itches, bleeds or doesn’t heal
  • anything that looks or feels different from the rest of your skin

A helpful way to remember what to look for is the ABCDE rule:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border (uneven or blurred edges)
  • Colour (more than one colour)
  • Diameter (larger than around 6mm)
  • Evolving (changing over time)

If you notice something unusual or concerning, don’t wait. Contact your GP or speak to a pharmacist for advice. Acting early really can save lives.

Looking after your skin is part of looking after your overall health. Whether you spend most of your time indoors or outdoors, sun safety and regular skin checks are things we can all take seriously.

This Skin Cancer Awareness Month, take a moment to protect the skin you’re in – and encourage friends and family to do the same.
