Ramadan begins today which is a sacred month of fasting, reflection and community for Muslims around the world. At #TeamYHG, we’re proud to support colleagues who observe this important time and to share more about what it means through their lived experiences.
Our colleague, Katie, is a revert Muslim, and she has shared with us about her journey and how it has shaped her understanding of inclusion in powerful ways.
Katie explained that becoming Muslim meant making significant changes in her life, often without the support of family or friends. Wearing a headscarf for the first time in a previous workplace was especially challenging. The shift in how people treated her left her feeling excluded and unable to be herself.
We’re so pleased to say that Katie says her experience at YHG has been very different.
During her eight years here, Katie says she has never felt judged or treated differently because of her faith. Instead, she has felt welcomed, respected and valued as an individual. For her, this reflects a culture where inclusion isn’t a policy – it’s a lived experience. Colleagues support one another, individuality is embraced, and everyone is encouraged to bring their whole selves to work.
Katie reminds us that small acts of kindness can make a big difference, and that how we treat each other can shape someone’s sense of belonging.
Supporting colleagues and friends during Ramadan
Throughout Ramadan, we encourage simple acts of awareness and consideration, such as:
· being mindful that when fasting, people may have lower energy at certain times
· offering flexibility around breaks, meetings, or when you’re planning on meeting up
· being thoughtful when planning events involving food
· asking respectful questions if you’re unsure – after all, kindness and curiosity go a long way
To everyone observing Ramadan, we wish you a peaceful and fulfilling month.
