During a routine assessment in Birchwood, Warrington, one of our Tree Officers, Darren, noted that some tilia (lime) trees needed some pruning.
This work was required to clear access to footpaths, reduce contact with other structures, and remove low hanging branches over roads which were in breach of the Highway Act 1980.
Once work began, our tree contracting team (Treetops De-Vegetation Services Ltd) spotted an active bird nest in one of the trees. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 legally prohibits the disturbance of nesting birds, so our contractors immediately stopped all work on that specific tree.
This shows our commitment and compliance with wildlife legislation and also demonstrates our compassion for wildlife in our communities.
We’re pleased to say that the area has been tended to, to address all immediate concerns, and work to the remaining tree will be rescheduled to take place once the nesting period is over and all birds have safely fledged.
We’re proud of our teams for always being mindful of our environments and for taking such good care of our communities.
