Colleagues, board members and partners from across the housing sector came together last week to celebrate the retirement of our former Chair of the Board, Mike Gaskell,  marking the end of a truly impressive career and his lasting impact on the sector.

The heart‑warming event brought people together to recognise Mike’s leadership, including his role in guiding us back to a G1 governance rating and the support and mentorship he’s offered to senior leaders across many organisations.

With a red‑carpet welcome, Mike’s favourite food (Pimblett’s Pies) and a many heartfelt speeches, it was a lovely afternoon from start to finish.

Mike Corfield, Chief Executive of Prestwich & North Western Housing Association, spoke about working alongside Mike and praised his unwavering commitment to improving homes and communities. He was followed by Simon Nunn, Executive Director for Member Services at the National Housing Federation, who highlighted Mike’s long‑standing belief in the power and importance of good housing.

Mike was then presented with gifts from #TeamYHG before our CEO, Jacque Allen, shared her own tribute, thanking Mike for his leadership and the pivotal role he has played in driving improvements across the organisation.

Speaking after the event, Jacque said “Mike’s leadership, expertise and wise counsel have been invaluable. His dedication to improving lives through safe, secure housing is a legacy he can be immensely proud of. Mike has shaped the strategic direction of YHG, supported and mentored our colleagues, and championed the needs of our residents with integrity and compassion. On behalf of everyone at YHG, I want to thank Mike for his remarkable service and wish him the very best for the future.”

Jacque was followed by Bev Messinger, Chair of the YHG Board, who spoke about the strong foundations Mike has laid and the example he has set through his commitment to improving people’s lives.

Mike’s wife and three sons joined him at the celebration, proudly listening as colleagues and friends shared stories from across his career.

In his closing words, Mike reflected on his journey in the sector and reaffirmed his passion for supported housing, speaking powerfully about the role it plays in saving lives and offering stability when people need it most. He also emphasised the importance of keeping customer voices at the centre of decision‑making, encouraging boards and leadership teams across the sector to continue championing lived experience.

One attendee summed up Mike’s impact perfectly, “You never forget the people who give you time.”

From everyone at Your Housing Group, thank you, Mike, for everything you’ve done, for us, for our residents, and for the wider sector.
